DIY Holiday Ornaments

This is our first Christmas as husband and wife as well as the first Christmas in our first Apartment together! I wanted to make something to mark this first Christmas. I found this recipe for making “better than salt dough”.

1/2 cup Cornstarch

1 cup Baking Soda

3/4 cup water

To make the Dough:

In a medium sized pot combine baking soda, cornstarch, and water. Mix over medium heat for several minutes. The dough will begin to thicken (mine got a little foamy). Keep stirring until the dough forms an even constancy similar to mashed potatoes and all the liquid is gone.

Place the dough into a glass bowl and cover. I covered mine with a damp paper towel to begin with to let is cool a little bit and then swapped the paper towel for plastic wrap. Allow the dough to cool completely.

Once the dough is cool kneed until smooth. You can add some more cornstarch if the dough is to sticky. Preheat the oven to 175F. Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper. Roll the dough out onto a smooth surface that is lightly dusted with corn starch. I used a sheet of parchment paper, but you can use the countertop or a cutting mat. Cut out the desired shapes. I used a glass cup and a heart shaped cookie cutter, but feel free to get imaginative. I used a straw to make a hole, to tie ribbon to hang the ornament.

Place the ornaments on the lined cookie sheet. Once you have finished cutting out all your ornaments you will Bake for about 1 hour, being sure to FLIP them over after 30 minutes.  Be care full when you flip not to burn your self or press on the ornaments to hard.

Once they are finished baking remove from oven and allow them to to cool. Once they are cool, add the ribbon of choice to be able to hang them. If you want to paint the ornaments you can or you can write a note on them like I did.

Alterations to the recipe: I ended up baking mine at around 200F and had to bake longer than the 1 hr. I flipped my ornaments a few time over the course of baking time.

Here are my finished ornaments:

~To commemorate our First Apartment I made an imprint with our apartment key and after baking I wrote the apartment address.

~Since we don’t have any kids, the dogs are our kids! I made an ornament with the dogs’ paw prints. Brady was much easier at lending a paw than his sister…her’s took a few tries, but we finally got one.

~I also made a heart shaped ornament and wrote one of my all time favorite love verses. The verse is found in Song of Solomon 4:3 “I found the one my soul loves.”
